About Our Trainer & Jockey Rankings

Welcome to our performance-tracking system. Unlike traditional leaderboards that simply tally total wins over a season, our rankings are designed to identify momentum. We focus on “The Now”—who is currently in peak form and performing at their highest personal standard.

By narrowing our lens to the most recent activity, we provide a snapshot of which stables and riders are hitting their stride right this second.

The Methodology: How it Works

Our rankings are built on a specific, data-driven formula that prioritizes efficiency and recent consistency over raw volume.

1. The 10-Day Rolling Window

We don’t look at the calendar month or the season-to-date. Instead, we look at the last 10 days they have had runners.

  • For a busy jockey, this might literally be the last 10 days.
  • For a smaller trainer who only races once a week, this might span two months of real time.
  • Why? This ensures every professional is judged on their most recent active cycle, regardless of how often they appear in the racecard.

2. Points Per Ride (PPR)

The core of the ranking is a simple but effective calculation:

  1. Points for a Win: Every winner earns the trainer or jockey points.
  2. The Division: Those points are then divided by the total number of rides/runners within that 10-day active window.

The Formula: Rank Score = (Total Win Points) / (Number of Runners/Rides)

3. Measuring Against Personal Standards

The most unique aspect of this system is that it measures a professional against their own output.

  • The “Big Name” Challenge: High-profile jockeys and trainers often have a massive volume of runners. Because we divide wins by the number of rides, a “big name” cannot simply coast on a high volume of horses. To stay at the top of our rankings, they must maintain a high strike rate.
  • The “In-Form” Underdog: A smaller trainer who has 3 winners from 5 runners in their last 10 active days will outrank a powerhouse stable that has 10 winners from 60 runners.

Why This Matters for You

Identifying Peak Form

Horse racing is a game of peaks and troughs. Stables go through “cold” spells where the horses aren’t quite right, and jockeys go through “hot” streaks where they can’t seem to miss. Our system is designed to catch the exact moment that upward trajectory begins.

Seeing Past the “Total Wins”

If you only look at the seasonal standings, the top names rarely change. Our rankings are dynamic. They allow you to see when a lesser-known jockey is riding out of their skin or when a specific trainer has their yard in exceptional health.

The Trade-Off

The only “downside” to this method is that it demands excellence from the elite. The bigger names need to do more to stay at the top of our table. We believe this is a feature, not a bug—it forces the rankings to reflect current quality rather than just historical quantity.

Summary

Our rankings aren’t just a list of who has the most trophies in the cabinet. They are a real-time heat map of the mounting yard. Whether it’s a world-class veteran or a rising star, if they are on our leaderboard, it’s because they are currently performing at the very top of their game.
